Joyce Carlson is publisher of Peak Publishing, which publishes the Powell River Peak, Weekend Shopper, www.prpeak.com and peaklive.ca. She was born and raised in Powell River and has been an active volunteer all her life. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Powell River and serves on its Festival of Performing Arts committee. She is secretary/treasurer for the Powell River Model Community for Persons With Disabilities. Professionally she is a board member for BC and Yukon Community Newspapers Association, is a past president of that association and as well as the Canadian Community Newspapers Association. She was president of the Powell River 2007 BC Disability Games and was a member of the Powell River Torch Relay Task Force. She was honoured to be selected to carry the torch in her community. Her volunteer activities were recognized in 2009 when she was one of 45 British Columbians recognized for  a Community Achievement Award at a special ceremony at Government House in Victoria. 

A past member of International Training in Communication, she was winner of the organization's club, district and regional speech contest and participated in the International Speech Contest in Florida. 

She and her husband Don have been married for 45 years. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law and two grandsons. A special member of their family is Bert, their West Highland Terrier.
